The first time I decided to make an Old Fashioned was after seeing Don Draper order them in the hit TV series Mad Men. An Old Fashioned cocktail is simple, sophisticated, and even has its own glass named after it (an Old Fashioned Glass)! Here’s how to make a classic Old Fashioned cocktail.

An Old Fashioned cocktail combines whiskey, sugar, bitters, and a twist of orange peel and is served in an Old Fashioned Glass (rocks glass).

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Rye Whiskey or Bourbon

  • 1 Sugar Cube

  • 2-3 Dashes of Angostura Bitters

  • 1 Dash Of Water

  • Orange Twist And Cheery For Garnish

Directions

  • Place a sugar cube in a chilled Old Fashioned Glass.
  • Wet the sugar cube with 2-3 dashes of Angostura bitters and 1 dash of water.
  • Muddle the sugar cube in the glass until it is completely dissolved.
  • Fill the glass with large ice.
  • Pour in 2 ounces of rye whiskey or bourbon over the ice.
  • Express the oils of an orange twist over the drink, then run the twist around the rim of the glass and drop it in the drink.
  • Garnish with a maraschino cherry.
