A picture of Stella Artois with the title "Stella Artois Calories Explained"

Beer drinkers are more and more health-conscious today, and that’s a good thing. However, this also means we want to know what is in our beer and why. Therefore, this blog is explicitly dedicated to answering the question of how many calories are in a Stella Artois. Here’s the short answer:

In the United States, there are 143 calories in an 11.2 fl. Oz bottle of Stella Artois with an ABV of 5%. In the United Kingdom, Stella Artois has an ABV of 4.6%, and it contains 129 calories per bottle. In Europe, Stella Artois has an ABV of 5.2% and contains 146 calories per bottle.

However, that certainly doesn’t answer the question entirely. Below, we’ll look at how many calories Ab InBev (the owner of Stella Artois) puts in Stella Artois Original (4.6-5.2%), 4%, Liberté, and Cidre, in more detail. We’ll also discuss the carbohydrates, proteins, fat, and alcohol in them. Furthermore, we’ll discuss the ingredients. Read on!

Stella Artois Original (4.6% – 5.2%)

Before we discuss the number of calories that are in a Stella Artois, which is originally a Christmas beer, we have to make it clear that the alcohol percentage of Stella Artois differs per part of the world. First of all, Stella currently has an alcohol percentage of 4.6% in the UK, whereas the U.S.A has 5% and Europe 5.2%.

However, even though the alcohol percentage differs, the ingredients used and the process of brewing the beer are still the same. Stella Artois is made with water, barley malt, Czech Saaz hops, and maize. These are the same ingredients that were used when the beer was first made in 1926.

4.6% (UK)

In the United Kingdom, Stella Artois has 129.09 calories in an 11.2 fl. Oz (331ml) bottle, which consists of 10.6 grams of carbohydrates and 1.3 grams of protein.

In the United Kingdom, Stella Artois has a lower alcohol percentage than the rest of the world. This is because the high alcohol content was linked with alcohol abuse which led to the nickname ‘wife beater’. Since 2007, Stella Artois has actively tried to change its brand image, lowering the beer from 5.2% to 4.8% in 2008 and 4.6% in 2020.

5% (United States)

In the United States, Stella Artois has 142.07 calories in an 11.2 fl. Oz (331ml) bottle, which consists of 12.2 grams of carbohydrates and 1.7 grams of protein.

In the United States, Stella Artois has had an alcohol percentage of 5% ever since it was first introduced in 1999. It’s believed that Stella Artois has a lower alcohol percentage than 5.2% (the original recipe) because this lowers the import rates they have to pay in the US. From 2021 onwards, Stella Artois is also made in the USA instead of imported from Belgium.

5.2% (Belgium)

In Belgium and most of Europe, Stella Artois has 146.2 calories in an 11.2 fl. Oz (331ml) bottle, which consists of 12.6 grams of carbohydrates and 1.7 grams of protein.

In Belgium and most of Europe, Stella Artois has an alcohol percentage of 5.2%. This is because this is the original recipe and, in Europe, it’s normal for beers certain European pale lagers (which is the type of beer that Stella Artois is) to have an alcohol percentage slightly above 5%.

Stella Artois Low-Alcohol (4%)

Stella Artois 4% is only sold in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Canada. It has 119.2 calories in an 11.2 fl. Oz (331ml) bottle, which consists of 9.6 grams of carbohydrates and 1 gram of protein.

Stella Artois 4% is only sold in these three countries because it was introduced to get rid of its negative brand image (as mentioned earlier) and appeal to a more health-conscious consumer. It was first introduced in 2008 and hasn’t made its way to other parts of the world.

Stella Artois Gluten-Free (4.6%)

In August 2018, Stella Artois launched a gluten-free version of their pale lager in the United Kingdom. To this day, the beer is only available in the United Kingdom.

Stella Artois Gluten Free has 129.1 calories in an 11.2 fl. Oz (331ml) bottle. Furthermore, it has 10.6 grams of carbs and 1.3 grams of protein. It’s made with the same ingredients as regular Stella Artois. However, special filtering creates a beer with less than 20 ppm gluten content.

Stella Artois Liberté (0%)

At the end of 2021, Stella Artois launched an alcohol-free version of their beer in the United States. This beer is named ‘Liberté’, French for ‘freedom’. It both suggests the beer is alcohol-free and that drinkers can enjoy beer longer during their nights out by switching to alcohol-free beer.

Stella Artois Liberté has 59.6 calories in an 11.2 fl. Oz (331ml) bottle, which consists of 13.9 grams of carbohydrates and 0 grams of fat or protein. It’s made with the same ingredients as regular Stella Artois. However, the fermentation process is cut short, which means the sugars in the liquid aren’t transformed into alcohol (which explains the high amount of carbohydrates).

Stella Artois Cidre (4.5%)

Stella Artois Cidre is sold in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Stella Artois Cidre has 168.8 calories in an 11.2 fl. Oz (331ml) bottle, which consists of 20.9 grams of carbohydrates and 0.3 grams of protein.

The ingredients in this Stella Artois Cidre are as follows: Water, Apple Juice Concentrate, Cane Sugar, Natural Flavor, Malic Acid, Sodium Citrate, Colors Added, Citric Acid.
